This painting explores various symbolisms within the educational system and society. The abacus serves as a metaphor for social constructs, featuring fixed structures and standardised expectations.
The “biscuits” at the top level represent children from the upper class, while those at the lower levels symbolise children from middle or lower classes. Each biscuit boasts unique and beautiful icing, yet all must shave off their colours to fit within the confines of the abacus.
In the bottom left corner, matches and math papers are scattered across the floor. Some matches are lit and tossed into the trash bin above, highlighting the power of innocent children. In primary education, matches often appear in math problems as tools for developing logical thinking skills. The fire and heat they produce symbolise life, but a single misuse could lead to destructive consequences, such as igniting the wooden abacus. – Crystal Ling
